Artist's Statement
Ceramics and fibers, along with drawings, are my primary media. My materials are mundane or everyday found objects, and the scale of my works is usually no taller than 20 inches; however, the work’s tactility and sense of familiarity allow me to communicate physical and emotional memories stored away in unconscious terrain. My work starts with finding an intriguing materiality that resonates with these memories.
As someone who spent time in a religious cult, experiencing both inside and outside views, I am interested in the beings that fall out of larger stories, that do not belong to structures we recognize, that reside in the space between different beliefs upon which individuals construct their lives. My artistic intention is to bring out formless untold entities. I visualize concealed conditions, voices, hopes and desires so that they become effable, so that they become the objects of speech.
My practice is an ongoing inquiry into the phenomena and structure of the world surrounding me and beyond. By collecting together subtle and untainted perceptual moments, I attempt to assemble within the work the evidence of my existence.
